Recovery College

Recovery College

Sunderland Recovery College provides a range of free, recovery‑focused educational courses for people with lived experience of mental health, as well as their friends, families and carers.

All courses are co‑produced and co‑facilitated by individuals who bring both professional knowledge and lived experience, creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment where people can learn from one another.

Our aims

Education
Our courses are designed to support a better understanding of mental health and the realities of day‑to‑day living. They offer practical knowledge, skills and insights that contribute to overall wellbeing and recovery.

Some courses explore mental health conditions and recovery approaches, while others focus on building social confidence, developing new skills and supporting everyday life.

Recovery and wellbeing
The college supports individuals to enhance their wellbeing and take a more active role in their own recovery. Courses draw on both lived experience and professional expertise, enabling individuals to make informed choices and build confidence in managing their mental health.

Alongside recovery‑focused learning, we offer opportunities to develop new skills, set personal goals and benefit from social interaction, recognising the importance of lifestyle, culture and community in supporting recovery.

Co-production
Co‑production is at the heart of everything we do. Every course is developed and delivered in partnership with people who have lived experience of mental health, whether personally or as a carer.

This approach ensures that learning is relevant and authentic, shaped by real experiences and supported by current professional knowledge to provide accurate and meaningful information.

Development of students
We support students to work towards their individual goals, build confidence and recognise their strengths and potential.

Learners are encouraged to fully engage in the opportunities offered by the college, including volunteering, contributing to course development, or progressing into further education, training or employment within the wider community.

Student and carer involvement
We are committed to shared decision‑making and continuous development. The college works in partnership with local organisations through a monthly operational group, ensuring that courses and activities continue to reflect the needs of communities within Sunderland.

Students and people who use mental health services are actively involved in these discussions, helping to shape the direction of the college and ensure that their voice is central to how it operates.
