Step inside the TEC House at Sunderland Care and Support and it doesn't feel like a demonstration space, it feels like a home.
What was once a caretaker's house has been thoughtfully transformed by the TEC Team, working in collaboration with the Home Improvement Agency (HIA) and Occupational Therapists, into a welcoming, fully accessible home that shows how technology can quietly support everyday life. It's not about gadgets for the sake of it. It's about making daily routines simpler, safer, and more comfortable.
Throughout the house, familiar equipment such as hoists, a through-floor lift, stair lift, hospital bed, and rise and recline chairs are in place to support physical needs. But what makes the space special is how naturally these sit alongside smart technology, all working together to give people more control over their day.
At the heart of it is voice control, powered by Amazon Alexa. With a simple phrase, the house responds.
Imagine starting your day by saying, "Good morning." In that moment, the blinds gently open to let the light in, the kettle begins to boil, and a friendly reminder is given to take medication. In the background, the vacuum starts its round, taking care of the cleaning, while even the family pet is fed automatically. What would normally take time, effort, and movement around the home is handled in seconds, all from one prompt.
It's the same throughout the day. Lights can be turned on without reaching for a switch. The television can be controlled without searching for a remote. Doors can be checked or secured from wherever you are. Small things, but together they make a big difference, especially for someone with limited mobility or confidence at home.
The TEC House is not only a place to see technology in action, but also a practical environment for real visits and assessments. Professionals can use the space to explore solutions alongside individuals and families, seeing first-hand how equipment and technology might work in a realistic home setting. This helps people make informed choices, build confidence, and better understand what could support them in their own home.
The TEC House also creates space for enjoyment and wellbeing. There's a calming sensory room, immersive virtual reality experiences, and interactive technology like RITA, designed to engage, comfort, and even bring a bit of fun into the day.
Safety is quietly built in too, with smart cameras and doorbells helping people feel secure without being intrusive.
To make this experience even more accessible, an upcoming virtual version of the TEC House is being developed. This will offer a fully guided online walk through of the property, allowing people to explore each room and feature in detail. Users will be able to see exactly how the technology works, what each piece of equipment is used for, and how it can be prescribed to support individual needs, all without needing to visit in person.
What stands out most is how natural it all feels. The technology doesn't take over, it simply supports. It allows people to do more for themselves, in their own way, and at their own pace. The TEC House is open to professionals, individuals, and families to come and experience what's possible.
